Philly Knob & Tube offers and manages knob and tube replacement in the City of Philadelphia, for single-family houses and older two-to-four-unit residential buildings. The electrical work itself is performed by appropriately licensed and insured electrical contractors.

## The K&T work we coordinate

Everything here concerns one wiring system: the porcelain knobs, tubes and cloth-covered conductors still found in some older Philadelphia rowhouses, twins and small apartment buildings, and the grounded circuits that replace them. A project starts by finding which runs still carry power, replaces those with modern cable, and ends with a record of what changed and what was left disconnected.

- [Inspection and circuit mapping](https://phillyknobandtube.com/knob-and-tube-inspection/): A licensed electrician traces which knob-and-tube circuits are still live, what they feed and where they connect, so any replacement is scoped from facts.
- [Partial replacement](https://phillyknobandtube.com/partial-knob-and-tube-replacement/): Replace the specific knob-and-tube circuits that matter now, disconnect them properly and write down exactly which ones remain.
- [Whole-home rewiring](https://phillyknobandtube.com/whole-home-knob-and-tube-rewiring/): Replace every active knob-and-tube branch circuit in the house, with the permit, inspections and a written record of what changed.
- [Historic homes](https://phillyknobandtube.com/historic-home-knob-and-tube-replacement/): Replace live knob-and-tube in an older Philadelphia house with a plan that decides, room by room, which period finishes are touched and which are left alone.
- [Attic replacement](https://phillyknobandtube.com/attic-knob-and-tube-replacement/): Replace the live knob-and-tube circuits above your ceilings before insulation, air sealing or storage covers them.
- [Removal and disconnection](https://phillyknobandtube.com/knob-and-tube-removal/): Disconnect knob-and-tube runs so they can never be re-energized, verify and document them, and pull out the abandoned material where removal is worth it.
- [Plaster-wall rewiring](https://phillyknobandtube.com/plaster-wall-knob-and-tube-rewiring/): New circuits fished through plaster-and-lath walls with planned, mapped openings and a patching scope agreed before the first cut.
- [During a renovation](https://phillyknobandtube.com/renovation-knob-and-tube-replacement/): Replace knob-and-tube that a remodel uncovers while the walls are open, with the electrical permit, rough-in inspection and other trades sequenced around it.
- [Two-to-four-unit buildings](https://phillyknobandtube.com/multi-unit-knob-and-tube-replacement/): Map every unit and the shared circuits, then replace live knob-and-tube in phases the people living there can work around.

## Licensed contractor fulfillment

Philly Knob & Tube sets up and manages each project; the electrical work is carried out by a licensed electrical contractor working to these standards.

- **Philadelphia Electrical Code (2020 NEC).** The City of Philadelphia enforces the 2020 National Electrical Code, which sets how new branch circuits are run, protected and grounded.
- **Licensed electrical contractor and L&I permit.** Electrical work in Philadelphia must be done by a contractor licensed with the Department of Licenses and Inspections, and the permit is applied for through eCLIPSE.
- **Third-party electrical inspection.** A licensed electrical inspection agency, hired by the owner or the owner's agent, inspects rough-in work before walls close and the finished job at the end.
- **Arc-fault and ground-fault protection.** AFCI and GFCI devices where the code calls for them on new and extended circuits, including kitchens, bathrooms, laundry areas and basements.
- **Planned openings in plaster.** Openings in plaster-and-lath walls and ceilings are located from the circuit map and kept to what the routing needs, so the patching scope can be written into the quote.

## How a job runs

The order stays the same whether the scope is two circuits in a rear bedroom or every circuit in a three-story rowhouse.

1. Survey Document the property, inspect visible routes, and map what appears to be active.
2. Define Agree on exactly which circuits, access openings and associated repairs belong in the scope.
3. Replace Install the planned replacement wiring through accessible routes and necessary openings.
4. Close out Complete required inspections and document the electrical scope actually performed.

## How pricing works

The guides explain what drives the cost in a Philadelphia house, and the cost estimator gives a planning range before anyone visits. The price for a specific property comes in a written quote after the walk-through, once the circuit map shows what is still live and how the basement, upper floors and plaster walls can be reached.

## Where we serve

Projects are limited to the City of Philadelphia, where L&I issues the permits. The neighborhood pages cover how housing stock and historic designations shape the work in each area.

## How to ask about a project

Describe the building, what an inspector or insurer has said and any deadline. The next step after a request is arranging a walk-through of the property.
